God's Good Herbs - The Olive Leaf
The olive leaf was the first botanical plant mentioned in the Bible (Gen. 8:11), and the olive tree is believed to be the tree referred to in Ezekiel 47:12: "The fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine." Its recorded use in treating a variety of health conditions in ancient Egyptian and Mediterranean cultures goes back to 1000 B.C.
Thomas Jefferson was known to have said, “The olive tree is surely the richest gift of Heaven.”
Olive leaf extract has many health benefits. Also known as oleuropein, olive leaf extract converts into elonolic acid within the body, a process drug companies have not been able to patent. It is regarded in the alternative medicine community as a great immune booster as well as for its ability to act as a natural killer of pathogens, inhibiting their replication by interfering with critical amino acid production essential for viruses. It has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties and is commonly used to fight colds and flu, yeast infections and viral infections - even hard-to-treat ones such as Epstein-Barr, shingles and herpes.
The olive leaf harbors antioxidant properties that scavenge free radicals and eliminate them before cell damage is done. Olive leaf extract that is made from fresh olive leaves has five times more antioxidant power than vitamin C, 28 times more than Noni juices, six times more than Goji juices and twice as much as green tea extract. It has also been known to help relax arteries, thereby increasing blood flow, which aids in lowering blood pressure and increasing circulation.
Olive leaf can be taken as a dried leaf tea, liquid tincture, powder or capsule. It is an extremely safe supplement as studies have concluded that even in doses several hundred times higher than recommended, no toxic or other adverse side effects appeared. It is recommended to take olive leaf twice daily to strengthen the immune system, especially during cold and flu season, and to increase the amount and frequency when fighting an existing viral or bacterial condition.
