The Outer Banks of North Carolina in the Winter!By DeeDee MacDonaldA great time to slow down, relax, take a walk on the deserted beach, feed the seagulls and reflect on your blessings.
The Outer Banks is a chain of barrier islands on the North Carolina coast U.S., extending southward 175 miles (282km). It stretches from the Virginia border to Cape Lookout. There are numerous beaches, making the Outer Banks a popular resort area. The Outer banks was once a popular hideout for pirates and has notorious stories of shipwrecks.
When you arrive on the Outer Banks, your directional indicators will be the Mile Markers. You begin at mile marker #1. When you ask for directions, they will be given to you using the mile marker closest to where you want to go. For example, Harris Teeters Grocery Store in at mile marker #10.
Take some books along to read. Start a fire in the fireplace. Cozy up and just enjoy the quite time. If you are with friends, enjoy the gift of friendship. If your children are along, spend time talking and really listening. It's a great place for it.
OK, time to get out of the house!
Sights to See
We visited the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Start at the visitor center for information, exhibits, and a bookstore. Exhibits and interpretive programs tell the Wright brothers' story, and you can see full-scale reproductions of the 1902 glider and the 1903 flying machine. Orville and Wilbur Wright took flight December 17, 1903. Their fourth try at flight lasted 59 seconds and went 852 feet. This was a success!
We had the good fortune to meet two very special people on our visit to the Wright Memorial. Jack Ward, direct descendent of Otho Ward, Surfman #7 and Jesse Ward, Great-Grandson of Captain Jesse Ward, Keeper of the Kill Devil Hills U.S. Life-Saving Station. It was the crew of the Kill Devil Hills U.S. Life-Saving Station that assisted the Wright Brothers with their experiments and the historic flight on December 17, 1903.
Take a ride to Wanchese, located on the southern end of Roanoke Island, the population is 1,708 and the total land area is 4.7 miles. Wanchese is a quiet, scenic, fishing town. You will find friendly people who will take time just to chat. This is one of the best places to see working fishing boats. We talked to a local, Debbie Owens, a fisherman and crabber, riding on her horse, Gabriel. Debbie said there were at least one hundred horses on the island of Wanchese. There are several restaurants located on the Island: Mann's, Fisherman's Wharf, and Queen Ann's Revenge to name a few.
Outer Banks Restaurants to try: Sweet Water, Basnight's Lone Cedar, Jolly Rogers, and The Beach Bread Company. Not all restaurants are open in the winter months.
There are at least ten golf courses on the Outer Banks, some are among the best you will ever play. We recommend The Point, and The Carolina Club.
The sunsets over the Albemarle Sound can be some of the most spectacular you will ever see.
Nothing can beat the Carolina Moon.
So, when you get the chance make sure you enjoy the Winter beauty of the Outer Banks of North Carolina!
