"Cruise"ing with Friends
Taking a cruise is fun, but taking a cruise with friends is even better! The day after Thanksgiving, my husband Ricky and I flew to Ft. Lauderdale with another couple to go on our very first cruise!
We were celebrating our 20th anniversaries, as our friends, Arthur and Leigh Ann, were also married in 1988. What better reason to take a cruise, and of course it was even better going with friends!
We spent a day at Ft. Lauderdale and woke up the next morning to board our ship, the Zuiderdam, (Holland America Cruise Lines). We were to spend 10 days on the ship hopping from one port to another. We visited the Bahamas, Aruba, Curacao, Panama, and Costa Rica. We had an awesome time just hanging out and relaxing on the pool deck or at one of the exotic beaches. We loved snorkeling in Aruba and Curacao (two islands north of Venezuela, South America) and taking in the beautiful scenery at each of our stopovers. Our most exciting adventures included visiting an authentic Indian village in Panama. I enjoyed horseback riding in the rain forests of Costa Rica while Ricky, Arthur, and Leigh Ann went flying on an extremely high zipline over the rain forest!
We had so much fun together! Just getting dressed up for dinner and enjoying whatever new mouth-watering appetizers, entrees, and desserts served for that night was exciting all in itself. Each night offered even more varieties of our favorite delicacies. I can't forget to mention our favorite waiter named Hunky Dory, who memorized up to 200 names of the guests on the ship! We became friends with him and he made the trip a little more fun by seeing an increasingly familiar face as the cruise continued. After dinner we would go to one of the premier shows featuring musicals, an impressionist, dancers, steel drums, or a comedian. We also didn't want to miss the hilarious Karaoke nights, the "Name that Tune" game show, and learning the latest dance moves from the pros! Leigh Ann and I loved dancing, shopping, catching some rays on the deck, and enjoying all the sights.
Whenever the chance arrived for all of us to hang out and play a game of Hearts or Canasta, we couldn't pass it up. Just hearing the island music at the poolside and watching the clouds sail by or viewing the very colorful sunsets was very refreshing and most relaxing. The trip was more exciting and entertaining with another couple to share the experience. We kept each other hopping and exploring and never missed a beat! The gift of friendship is so special! Sharing such memories together with friends like Arthur and Leigh Ann was a treat we will always cherish!
