World-Class Friends
Charlie and Bonnie Burke are dear friends of mine and Dave's and have made some amazing adventures I thought you would find interesting.
Having first retired from the Navy and then from the solo practice of law, Charlie and his wife Bonnie set out to see the Eastern United States on SONATA, their 42'foot Grand Banks.
Bonnie and Charlie secured their Coast Guard Captain's licenses, prepared their boat for departure, and went north to Canada, up the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, through New Jersey, up the Hudson into the Erie and Oswego Canals, then across Lake Ontario.
They crossed the lake into the Trent-Severn Canal system, then on to the Georgian Bay and Lake Huron's North Channel. Then it was over to Lake Michigan and Chicago, the Illinois, Mississippi, Ohio Rivers to the Tennessee River, up to Knoxville. Then it was back South to the Tombigbee Waterway and Mobile, AL. Then it was west to New Orleans and Houston, then back to Pensacola and the Florida panhandle down and around to Key West. Next, it was up the East Coast of Florida where they departed for the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale and upon their return to Florida continued up the Intercoastal Waterway back to Norfolk, VA.
Their trip covered some 12 months, 8,000 miles, 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel for SONATA, three countries, 18 states, and the creation of friendships that will last a lifetime. The trip is all on their blog which is: http://sonatacruising.blogspot.com.
