Backyard Adventure
In the midst of the daily chores that need to be done, like laundry, dishes, and meal preparation, I sometimes struggle with neglecting my household duties in order to make quality time to play with my five-year-old son Parker. He likes to say, "Forget those old dishes, Mamma. Let's play."
One day, Parker had finally convinced me to recklessly abandon a load of laundry and step outside into his world of make-believe. He asked, "How about a game of pirates?" When I agreed to play his game, he was so excited. It was a game both he and I had played together many times before.
We jumped on the swing set in the backyard and took our designated seats as we "set sail" for the unknown. We were, of course, mindful of the scurvy pirates (folks walking their dogs down the sidewalk) who were trying to get our secret treasure.
For our adventure, Parker had equipped me with the finest of plastic swords. I threw caution to the wind as I waved my pirate sword high in the air. Just then my next door neighbor stepped out his front door. He stood there and looked at us with a puzzled expression on his face. At first I was embarrassed, but what could I do? I smiled and hollered out, "We're playing pirates." He laughed as he went back inside. As for my son and me, we returned to our quest of fighting off scurvy pirates and protecting our secret treasure.
No matter how silly I looked, I was happy to be creating memories with my son. I was also thankful that God had helped me to refocus my attention on the really important things of life, like spending time with my son.
