How to Tip on a Trip
With summer approaching, traveling picks up and so does tipping.
Offering a little extra money for services rendered is a polite and customary practice in our society. When your children observe your polite habits of tipping, they learn an essential part of showing consideration for people who provide services. The following are guidelines for tipping at airports and nice hotels that would be beneficial to explain to your children.
- Airport staff who check your bags: 50 cents a bag (no need to tip when checking bags at a ticket counter).
- Taxi: generally 15-20 percent of the total fare.
- Hotel Doorman: $1
- Bellman: $2 (if lots of bags, $3).
- Room Service: 15 percent of the bill, not less that $1.
- Maid: $1 a day ($2 if two people are in the room).
- Bellman (for bringing something, such as an iron): $1
- Restaurant: 15 to 20 percent of the bill.
Take a sufficient supply of one-dollar bills with you when you travel. Allow your children to participate. Let them keep some of the ones in a wallet or purse. Ask them for the amount you need when it's time to tip. Share the joy of kindness and generosity with your children and you will employ their consideration for others.
