Preferring One Another
To defer to another is to give up ones rights in order to honor another. Deference is a familiar concept in the art of good manners. It is, however, less and less common in our present society.
It is more prevalent to see individuals clawing and vying for what is there and for even more than their share—they shove others out of the way to take was is not even theirs to take.
The Bible speaks of preferring one another above ourselves. When we give our seat to another although we may have been there first, or allow the person that arrived at the same parking space at the same time to go ahead and have it, or offer to share the last cookie, and keep the smaller portion for ourselves… these are some practical examples of how we can prefer others.
The difference in being taking advantage of, being cheated or getting the short end of the stick, and choosing to defer, is that deferring is a voluntary act of our will. No one has imposed this on us—we choose it ourselves. This fact alone gives us the power to make our own choices, and a choice for good reciprocates blessings. So the next time who could choose to push through and get your way, make a conscious decision to prefer one another and watch what blessings follow.
