Apple Washington I grew up living in an apartment. One of my greatest memories is coming through the front door of our building and being enveloped in the warm smell of baked apples. I knew at that very moment that autumn had arrived and Michigan apples were ripe! I also knew that my mom had made my very favorite dessert….Apple Washington. This is a recipe my grandmother passed down to my mom when she and my dad were married; it had been my dad's favorite, too!
Ingredients:
- 5 medium apples (use tart apples…granny smith, washington) peeled and roughly sliced
- 1-1/2 C. Bisquik
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon (or more to taste)
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1-1/2 C. Brown Sugar
- 1/2-3/4 C. softened butter
Directions:
- Place cut apples in the bottom of a 8x8 greased baking dish.
- Mix next four ingredients in a large bowl with a fork until lumpy. If the mixture is too dry to form lumps, add more butter 2 TBS at a time
- Spread Bisquik mixture over apples.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until apples are tender.
- Serve Warm
(Also delicious at room temperature)
Enjoy a la mode; or as my dad would with a slice of cheddar cheese. As he says, "An apple pie without the cheese is like a hug without the squeeze!" -Dale Rowell (my dad)
