Apple WashingtonI grew up living in an apartment. One of my greatest memories is coming through the front door of our building and being enveloped in the warm smell of baked apples. I knew at that very moment that autumn had arrived and Michigan apples were ripe! I also knew that my mom had made my very favorite dessert….Apple Washington. This is a recipe my grandmother passed down to my mom when she and my dad were married; it had been my dad's favorite, too!
Ingredients:
- 5 medium apples (use tart apples…granny smith, washington) peeled and roughly sliced
- 1-1/2 C. Bisquik
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon (or more to taste)
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1-1/2 C. Brown Sugar
- 1/2-3/4 C. softened butter
Directions:
- Place cut apples in the bottom of a 8x8 greased baking dish.
- Mix next four ingredients in a large bowl with a fork until lumpy. If the mixture is too dry to form lumps, add more butter 2 TBS at a time
- Spread Bisquik mixture over apples.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until apples are tender.
- Serve Warm
(Also delicious at room temperature)
Enjoy a la mode; or as my dad would with a slice of cheddar cheese. As he says, "An apple pie without the cheese is like a hug without the squeeze!" -Dale Rowell (my dad)
