Eternal Excitement
The other day at the dinner table, as a way to keep our conversations positive, I decided to randomly ask the children what they were excited about. I started with the youngest ones and expected their answers to be what most children typically have on their minds, but little did I know the response I would get.
Galen, age five, said he was excited that we were having ice cream for dessert after dinner. We all smiled and agreed that that was a great thing to be excited about, and a special treat! Grayson, one of the seven-year-old twins, bounced in his seat and exclaimed how excited he was at the possibility of going to Disney World next summer, that Daddy had mentioned earlier in the week. We agreed that that would be awesome and lots of fun for everyone if we should get to do that. Then, Graham, the other seven-year-old twin, with the sweetest, most pleasant expression on his face, and with all sincerity in his voice as if the world had stopped all around him, answered with these words: “I’m excited that Jesus is coming back. I really want to see Him.”
I’m not kidding. We were all stunned and left speechless. We were astounded at the truth and love for Jesus that was beaming from Graham’s young face. I can’t explain the true simple joy that I could see in his eyes—such assurance and delight—such peace and hope.
I affirmed his response and told him that what He was talking about is what we as Christians have referred to for centuries as the “Blessed Hope,” and now, he too, shared in that joy—an eternal excitement that words can’t quite explain. He smiled with a certain soberness of mind and spirit that few children experience and even some adults never know. . . and confidently took his place in the great company of believers—standing shoulder to shoulder with other great heroes of the faith—having discovered something so precious—a indescribable discovery of faith.
It was truly one of those motherhood moments that I won’t ever forget. May we all be excited that Jesus is coming back!
