Praying Friends
One of the most precious things we can teach our children is to care for others. When we allow our children to grow up without this opportunity, they tend to become self-centered and self-absorbed, with little thought, consideration or compassion for others.
I recently discovered the joys of this concept with some friends who live out of the area. As my friend and I were exchanging prayer needs with each other, our children also begun to pray regularly for each other and lift up specific needs to the Lord.
During the bedtime prayers that I would say with my children, they would remember the needs of their friends out of the area and made sure that we remembered to pray for them. Rachel was suffering with a fever and we prayed for her. Our friends needed to sell their home that was on the market for six months, so we prayed and within a few weeks, it was sold!
They also experienced our friends praying for us, for wisdom, direction, and victory in our lives. We could feel spiritual strength from the prayers we knew they were praying for us. It was a great exercise for our children to know that they are not alone in the day to day journey of a life dedicated to following Christ and that we are supported through the friendships of other believers who care for us.
I would encourage you to allow your children to develop “praying friends,” and watch God build their faith and answer prayer!
“Bear ye one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ,” Galatians 6:2 (KJV).
