Haystacks with Baby Jesus Recipe: A Great Way to Celebrate Christmas
I’m always looking for meaningful activities for the children at Christmas time to have fun, create memories and to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas! I came across this precious idea and I think we’re going to try it during the holidays this December.
This recipe offers a great opportunity to discuss the humble birth of Jesus and how He was wrapped in cloth and placed in a manger (Luke 2:7) on the first Christmas Day. Mary and Joseph probably would have used hay to cushion the manger (an animal feeding trough). Children will enjoy making them and eating them.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup butterscotch chips
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1/2 cup peanuts (optional)
- 2 cups chow mein noodles
- 6 large marshmallows
- 12 whole almonds
- Black decorating gel
Directions:
1. Using kitchen shears, cut two circular ends off each marshmallow (feel free to eat the middle section!). Cut a small slit in the middle of each marshmallow piece, and insert an almond through the slit. Draw eyes with black gel. Set aside.
2. Melt the chips and peanut butter in the microwave (3-5 minutes on 50% power).
3. Stir in peanuts and chow mein noodles.
4. Drop in spoonfuls on wax paper, and place marshmallows on each.
5. Refrigerate for faster set, or let sit overnight on the counter.
Note: I found this recipe and other meaningful ways to Celebrate Christmas on a great website called www.celebratingholidays.com. See their pages about Jesus and the Nativity Scene for more intriguing information.
