I
grew up
the daughter of a pastor. We always had small intimate congregations,
so those who attended became family friends. There is something about
having only a few people to shepherd that makes you personally invest
in each one. So I remember people fondly from Maine, Hawaii, and
Colorado. My dad also spent 20 years in the Navy, first enlisted, but
after I was born, he went to Bible College and was commissioned as a
reserve chaplain.
In Maine my love
for the arts was born. I studied the violin and played in the youth
symphony and in church. In a special class in school we wrote and
produced a video to welcome people to Brunswick. For me, the piece
de resistance, came every year asthe fourth and fifth graders would do Gilbert
and Sullivan musicals. In fourth grade, I played a sailor in H.M.S.
Pinafore (appalled that I couldn't be a girl). In fifth, I got to play
Yum Yum (a lead) in the Mikado. Phew! I was in love!! In
sixth grade I sang in chorus and got a scholarship to music camp the
next summer, which was very fun.
Three days into seventh grade we moved to Hawaii. My dad had
gone back to active duty and we were stationed at
Sub Base, Pearl Harbor. Here I began to
learn how to mend a broken heart. My parents sent my sister
and me to Christian school, which was a great environment for
me to grow socially.
We all decided
we'd like to live in Colorado when my dad retired from the Navy, and
God agreed. So I finished high school in Grand Junction and decided to
study musical theatre and vocal performance locally at Mesa State
College. I was blessed with a full academic scholarship to study what I
loved, and after 4 1/2 years and an exciting choir tour of Europe, I
graduated Magna cum Laude. I spent a couple of years
waiting tables at a spectacular Italian restaurant, singing arias
tableside, singing at weddings, and doing plays with a few local
theaters, and had spent eight years as a weekend radio announcer at a
Christian radio station, before moving to the
Washington, D.C. area.
A year in D.C.
gave me the opportunity to begin working on production crews.
God opened the door for me to be a production assistant on
West Wing, which led to jobs on commercials, a documentary, an HBO
film, the NBA All-Star Awards Concert, and the Rock and Race for the
Cure concert on the mall.
Currently, I live in Newport News, VA. I have been the office manager
for two chiropractors for 6 years. I got married in April, and we spent
10 days in beautiful Paris (France, not Kentucky) exploring museums and
gardens, French cafes, the Sacre Coeur Basilica, and Versailles. I
loved it. I have been blessed to sing with
the Virginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus for 3 years and have learned a
lot listening to the other singers.
There are so many tests and trials the Lord guides us through. I have been
shaped by the hands of God, and that process can be painful. I am
hoping I am becoming someone he can use to make a difference in the
world.
